LET'S face it, this summer has been a washout.

So, if you're heading into autumn still desperate for some sun, we've found the warmest short-haul holiday destinations during October and November.

The autumn is a great time to jet off on holiday, with schools back, airports less crowded and prices much more affordable.

There are plenty of sun soaked destinations within easy each of the UK.

Here's our pick of the destinations that are still hot in October and November and the best holiday deals to each.

Cyprus

Cyprus is one of the most southerly islands in the Med, so it's a pretty safe bet for late autumn sunshine.

In October temperatures can reach an average high of 26ºC, with nine long hours of sunshine. Things cool off a little in November, but they're still pleasant enough to enjoy the beach and dinners al fresco with average highs of 23ºC.

From ancient castles to breathtaking beaches, peaceful regions like Nissi Beach to large resorts like Paphos, this sunny island has something for everyone and it's only about a four hour flight from the UK.

Greece

Rhodes, Crete, Kos are all good options for a hot holiday in Greece. Rhodes has warm temperatures of about 24ºC even in autumn, with traditional villages, mountains and Blue Flag Beaches to explore.

The southerly island of Crete is a beautiful destination with great beaches and hotels or villas to stay in, with average temperatures of 25ºC.

Meanwhile, Kos, which is one of the most southerly of the Greek islands and is close to the Turkish coastline also has a warm autumn climate with high temperatures of 23ºC in October.

Malta

A short flight away is Malta, which is based in the Med between Sicily and the Tunisian coast.

The island nation and its sister island Gozo are both blessed with a sunny climate, even in December.

Average high temps in October are 25ºC and 21ºC in November, with lots for visitors to see and do, from buzzy capitals like Valletta to sandy beaches and quaint fishing villages.

Portugal

The Algarve, Madeira, and the Azores are three Portuguese destinations that should be firmly on your list if you're after autumn sun.

Madeira is a small island on the green list that's close to the Canaries and is great for sunbathing and is known for its walking trails and botanical gardens. Another island option is the Azores, famed for its dramatic landscapes.

The Algarve is always a popular choice for Brits and even outside of the peak summer months there are lots of visitors and festivals still going on.. In October and November you can expect high temperatures of between 20-25ºC.

Canary Islands

If you're after a great value break and some sunshine, the Canary Islands is our top pick, especially for a family holiday.

October and November are great months to visit Morocco, because the temperatures are a lot more pleasant than during the summer, when the heat can be too much.

Expect highs of 23 – 28°C, which are perfect for exploring the souks and picturesque streets or for stopping off at a rooftop cafe.
