Will Turkey be on the green list for summer holidays?

While still to be confirmed, the UK government is expected to lift the travel ban on May 17 meaning holidays abroad can go ahead.

A handful of countries will be given coveted green status in a new travel traffic light system based on jab roll out and Covid rates – meaning Brits can visit with just two tests on their return and don't need to self-isolate.

At the beginning of March, Turkish officials said they were prepared to let in unvaccinated British tourists, as long as they'd received a negative test.

But unfortunately it is now unlikely that Turkey will on the green list for summer holidays.

If it is on the amber list, this means you will need:

  • A negative test taken before returning to the UK
  • Mandatory ten-day quarantine at home
  • Two Covid tests, taken on day two and day eight

If on the red list, then returning Brits will have to pay £1,750 to quarantine at a government-approved hotel.

The country is facing another surge of the virus, with rising infections and deaths.

Last month, the daily case rate hit pandemic-highs of 63,000, forcing Turkey into its first full lockdown.

Under the restrictions in Turkey, in place until at least May 17, locals must stay at home but for essential shopping trips and to receive urgent medical treatment.

Travel between cities requires official approval, while schools are closed and there are strict capacity limits on public transport.

What are the travel restrictions for Turkey?

It is still illegal to travel abroad for a holiday from the UK, and rule-breakers face fines of up to £5,000.

Direct flights between UK and Turkey are currently operating, but the Foreign Office advises against all but essential travel to the country based on Covid risks.

All passengers aged six and above must show a negative PCR test taken within 72 hours before departure.

There is currently no requirement to self-isolate once in Turkey.

All arrivals into Turkey, except Turkish citizens or residence permit holders, must complete an online form within 72 hours of travel.

Face masks must be worn while in airports and on planes to and from Turkey.
