Like many couples with young kids, Prince William and Kate Middleton must get creative when it comes to finding time for date nights.

The Duke and Duchess often mix business with pleasure, getting as much enjoyment out of work engagements like Wimbledon and as they can while the children are at school or tucked up in bed.

And it won’t be long before Prince George joins them at evening events. The eight year old melted fans at the Euros final in his little suit!

The Duke and Duchess were seen roaring with laughter, dressed up at the Royal Variety Performance in December 2019 when Rob Beckett teased the couple that they were on a 'date night'.

The comedian joked, "Have you booked the babysitter ‘til midnight or one? It’s worth the 20 quid for the extra hour."

Royal expert Duncan Larcombe shares his inside knowledge of the royal couple’s date nights and why their spark is still so strong.

Watching the cream of British showbiz talent at the annual variety performances is always a firm favourite in the royal couple’s calendar, but it seems William and Kate are at their happiest with a cosy meal for two.

"Kate and William’s relationship blossomed when they were at St Andrew’s University, doing normal studenty things and just enjoying each other’s company," says Duncan.

"Being a future king you might expect William to whisk Kate away to Paris for the day or an extravagant lunch at a top restaurant, but they’ve never been like that."

"They’re more of a fish and chips on the seafront type of couple, as we saw when they went back to St Andrew’s for an engagement recently."

During the royal engagement at there, the couple were spotted going for a quiet meal at Forgan’s restaurant in the seaside town.

They asked for a private seating area at the back of the restaurant, a popular haunt with celebs such as golfing star Rory Mcilroy.

"There was no pomp and ceremony or fanfare, they were very nice and when they left they were very complimentary," said manager Marc, who declined to give his last name.

"Whenever they’re working together, the one thing William and Kate try to do is to have breaks put into the schedule," says Duncan.

"On their tour of Canada they had an overnight break on a remote island close to the arctic circle. It’s really important for them to spend time together as a couple."

That’s not to say the Duke and Duchess don’t enjoy an entertaining night out together. William let slip that he and the Duchess had slipped out on a secret date to Cirque Du Soleil.

Unnoticed by the world’s media, the couple attended a performance when the talented acrobatics troupe visited London early last year.

"We went to watch the Cirque du Soleil recently, it was amazing." he shared on the couple’s royal tour of Ireland last March.

"They like to go to the West End and they usually manage to sneak in without any fuss,” says Duncan. “They keep a low profile and do normal things without anyone noticing, just like Princess Diana did."

But for William and Kate, low key is when they’re at their happiest.

"Since pandemic restrictions have been lifted, William and Kate and the children have visited Kate’s parents at their home in Bucklebury, Berkshire," says Duncan.

"And while the doting grandparents do the babysitting, William and Kate have been able to slip to the local pub for a night out, just the two of them."

"I’m told that they did this to celebrate William’s birthday in June."

"Another favourite of the couple is for William to cook bolognese for Kate and they sit on the sofa watching TV. It reminds them of their student days when they first met and their enduring romance began."
