WHEN WILL YOU BE ABLE TO GET A MILKSHAKE?

It's not known exactly when McDonald's 1,250 branches will be selling milkshakes again.

But the shortages will last for a week – which could mean that you'll still be unable to buy one early next week.

We've asked McDonald's when it expects milkshakes will be available again and we'll update this story when we know more.

McDonald's has had shortages before but never specifically milkshakes and to this scale and time length.

Here's everything you need to know about McDonald’s Monopoly as it starts today.

And check out what the prizes on offer are for the big event.

Six items have been scrapped from the McDonald's menu this week – see which ones.

EXPLAINED: WHY CAN'T YOU GET A MILKSHAKE?

The fast food giant has blamed a lack of lorry drivers for its supply issues – which is an issue affecting thousands of businesses.

The Road Haulage Association (RHA) estimates there is a shortage of more than 100,000 drivers in the UK.

It's meant that restaurants to supermarkets have been struggling to get essential supplies delivered to stores.

Nando's had to close 50 stores last week because it had run out of chicken, while KFC warned some menu items were unavailable earlier this month due to "weeks of disruption" getting food to its branches.

A McDonald's insider told The Sun yesterday that the chain has had to "prioritise our core items over heavier, bulky ones", meaning milkshakes and bottled drinks have been pulled to ensure food and fizzy drinks hit branches.

MCDONALD’S MILKSHAKE SHORTAGE: CAN I STILL GET ONE?

The Sun revealed yesterday that restaurants will be without milkshakes for a week while supply issues continue.

And while bottled drinks are off the cards too, you'll have to order a fizzy drink from McDonald's dispenser machines if you're thirsty.

It means that you're very unlikely to find a branch still selling milkshakes.

But we've asked McDonald's if any restaurants at all still have the treats available, and we'll give you updates when we know more.

MCDONALD’S RUNS OUT OF MILKSHAKES FOR A WEEK ACROSS THE COUNTRY AMID SUPPLY ISSUES

Restaurants will be without them all week after delivery problems forced bosses to prioritise food and fizzy drinks.

The fast food giant has blamed a lack of lorry drivers — an issue affecting thousands of businesses.

An insider said: “We had to prioritise our core items over heavier, bulky ones.” McDonald’s has also pulled bottled drinks at its 1,250 diners in England, Scotland and Wales.

The chain said: “We apologise for any inconvenience, and thank customers for their continued patience.

"We’re working hard to return these items to the menu as soon as possible.”

It comes a week after Nando’s was forced to shut around 50 restaurants across Britain because of serious chicken supply problems — which had hit KFC a week earlier.

HAS THERE BEEN A MILKSHAKE SHORTAGE BEFORE?

McDonald's has had shortages before but never specifically milkshakes and to this scale and time length.

In June 2021, Chicken Selects and Big Flavour Wraps were taken off the menu due to a nationwide shortage of chicken.

WHERE IN THE UK ARE MCDONALD'S RUNNING OUT OF MILKSHAKES?

While shortages haven't impacted every McDonald's across the country, many have experienced issues.

The chain has warned each of its 1,250 outlets could experience milkshake and other drink shortages.

Milkshakes will be off the menu for customers across England, Scotland and Wales.

A McDonald's spokesperson has said: "Bottled drinks and milkshakes are temporarily unavailable in restaurants across England, Scotland and Wales.

"We apologise for any inconvenience, and thank our customers for their continued patience.

"We are working hard to return these items to the menu as soon as possible.”

HOW DO PRIZES COMPARE TO PREVIOUS YEARS?

In 2019, the last time McDonald's ran Monopoly, £100,000 in cash was also the top prize available for four winners.

Like this year, all you had to do was collect both dark blue properties.

One difference this year is that there's no car up for grabs.

Last time, there was an offer of a Mini Cooper for 20 lucky winners who collected all three green properties.

Plus you could have won £2,000 holiday spending money and a PS4 console.

One of the most likely prizes you might have won in the last game was a £50 voucher for Boohoo as 18,000 were available.

EXPLAINED: HOW DOES THE MCDONALD'S MONOPOLY WORK?

Customers can collect game pieces on qualifying McDonald's products, including the co-ordinated road names like Mayfair and Fleet Street, just like you would in the board game.

You will find them as stickers which will appear on the packaging of whatever food or drink you buy from the chain.

Each game piece represents a tile on the Monopoly board which you can pick up for free in the restaurant or play along online – when you collect a set, you get a prize.

Prize-seekers should ignore the dates on this year's game pieces, as they have been reused from last year's game that did not go ahead.

Pieces which show a "play until" date of May 4, 2021, will actually be valid until October 5, 2021.

EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT MCDONALD’S MONOPOLY 2021 INCLUDING WHEN IT STARTS

While the annual competition was cancelled in 2020 because of coronavirus, the food fan fave has now returned.

McDonald's Monopoly is starting today (Wednesday August 25).

It will last for six weeks before the game ends.

Normally it occurs around spring time and in 2020 the promotion was due to start shortly before it closed all 1,350 branches on March 23 because of the coronavirus crisis.

PEOPLE FRUSTRATED OVER ITV COVERAGE OF THE MILKSHAKE SHORTAGE

While covering the story, ITV spoke to people in Scotland about how the shortage was impacting them.

However, people have taken to Twitter to say that this situation is quite over the top.

One wrote: "Please…please…tell me this is a spoof news report? I am aware that McDonalds have some milkshake issues but for the love of God surely STV didn't run a news report on it?"

Another said: "I don't get what the big deal is. Most of them never seem to have ice cream machines that actually work anyway."

    • Milica Cosic

EXPLAINED: WHY IS THERE A MILKSHAKE SHORTAGE?

The lack of milkshakes in stores has been caused by a combination of the changes in immigration rules with Brexit, a shortage of lorry drivers, and Covid-19 restrictions.

This has resulted in supplies getting held up at the UK border and is therefore impacting stores nationwide.

        COVID CHAOS

The game was due to return in March 2021 but was postponed due to the coronavirus pandemic.

The cancellation means that more than 200million Monopoly game pieces had already been printed and dated.

That means customers will have to check the dates on McDonald's website to make sure they don't miss out on a chance to bag a prize.

In total, the game has been delayed for two years due to restaurant closures during the pandemic.
