Meghan Markle joined the royal ranks when she started to appear publicly with Prince Harry at the end of 2017. However, experts at Parrot Print claimed that she did not adopt her own royal body language, but rather imitated Kate Middleton’s.

Kate Middleton is not one to put a foot wrong when it comes to etiquette.

It is therefore unsurprising that the then-Duchess quickly found a pose that suited her for royal photographs.

It is so elegant and polite, so quintessentially Kate, that the pose was named after her – the “Duchess slant”.

Experts at Parrot Print explained: “This pose was named after Kate Middleton once she attended public royal engagements after joining the Royal Family.”

It was a carefully curated pose – rather than an accidental sitting position – whereby the subject has their knees parallel to each other and slightly slants the knees to create a zig-zag effect.

The experts continued: “It was further emphasised as intentional when Meghan Markle also began attending these engagements, and adopted the same pose.”

Etiquette expert Myka Meier, who reportedly coined the term, revealed that there may be a specific reason Kate and then Meghan adopted the sitting position.

She stated: “Your legs are angled so that the camera only shoots the sides of your legs and protects your modesty.”

Princess Diana was pictured sitting in the same position occasionally, with her legs slightly slanted in a zig-zag.

According to Myka, Kate does a slight variation of the Duchess Slant when needs be, particularly when she is sitting in front of a crowd for a long time.

This pose is known as The Cambridge Cross, where the knees and ankles stay together, crossing at the ankle. The heels of the shoes also touch the floor.

Kate adopts another pose for when she is standing and carrying a handbag – the Cambridge Carry.

Myra explained: “The Duchess uses this position when walking, standing, and speaking with others.

“Toes are aligned, shoulders are still rolled back, and hands are in front of the body.”

Holding the handbag prevents Kate from clenching her fists or intertwining her fingers, making her look “tense”.

With Kate and Meghan having their photograph poses down to a tee, what do their husbands do whilst getting snapped?

According to Parrot Prints, Prince William’s signature pose is a confident stance with his legs placed wide apart.

Interestingly, the experts commented that this body language ritual is totally “opposite” to Kate’s.

As for Prince Harry, he adopts more of a “rogue” positioning when it’s time for an official family photo.

“Tucking one hand in a suit jacket or waistcoat, it can make for a more natural stance.”
