Dad’s not a big party animal and Mum would often go out with friends without him. Then he recently started going to the pub with a neighbour – another man, who is divorced.
Out of the blue he came back from the pub and told Mum he doesn’t love her. He left to go round to the neighbour’s, leaving Mum crying.

They might have been unhappy for some time.
It is difficult to judge other people’s relationships, even when you are close to them.
Tell your parents you can’t be involved in their disputes and they shouldn’t expect you to act as their sounding board.
Instead, encourage them to get some couples’ counselling via relate.org.uk. You can find emotional support via themix.org.uk, who help anyone under the age of 25.
