Supermarket law change will affect anyone who shops at Aldi, Lidl, Tesco, M&S and more

A new law coming into place on Thursday 27 January will see shoppers no longer required to wear a mask while browsing inside stores, including supermarkets.

It is now down to personal choice should you wish to wear a mask or not, as was the case prior to November 2021 when new measures were put in place.

Government guidance continues to recommend the use of face coverings, especially in enclosed or crowded spaces.

Businesses can now set their own mask policies, with many still opting to display signs asking customers to wear a mask.

Supermarkets will now be deciding their own policies on face coverings in-store, with retailers such as Sainsbury's, Morrisons, and Waitrose all still encouraging shoppers to wear a mask.

According to Mirror, a Sainsbury's spokesperson said: "Safety remains our highest priority. We're asking our customers and colleagues in England to continue to wear a face covering in our stores if they are able to."

While a spokeswoman for John Lewis and Partners, which includes Waitrose, reportedly said: "We'll be suggesting people wear masks in our stores, although it will be down to individuals to make a personal choice."

Stores such as Lidl, Aldi, and Tesco have not yet clarified their store policies, but previously they have opted to introduce a voluntary mask policy.

Helen Dickinson, chief executive of the British Retail Consortium, said: "The Government’s decision to remove Plan B restrictions, including wearing face coverings in a retail setting will enable shopping to return to more normal experience for customers, employees and businesses.

"Retailers ask customers to be considerate to those around them when choosing whether to wear a face covering and to respect the decision of other customers."

Face coverings remain mandatory in Wales and Scotland.
