The coronavirus outbreak changed everyone’s lives in so many ways. And one of the more positive things was that more people than ever before decided to get a dog. Perhaps we all needed the calming effect of something to love and stroke during unsettling times? Or maybe it was simply a good excuse to get out for a walk?

Like baby names, pet names tend to go in and out of style. Surprisingly, the classic name for pooches, Fido, doesn’t even make the top 100 any more. (Less surprisingly, neither does the Prime Minister’s moniker, Boris!)

Naming your four legged friend is tricky. It needs to suits your adorable ball of fluff, yet also be easy to bellow in public across the park.

For instance Katie Price's latest dog is called Precious. The French bulldog puppy was a gift from boyfriend Carl Woods and was named by daughter Princess. Katie lost her beloved pet Rolo last year. 'We might not have a baby, but this is our new baby together,' she cooed.

Or you could call your pooch a more humorous name like Paris Hilton’s legendary chihuahua Tinkerbell.

Prince William and Kate Middleton – who grieved for the loss of their beloved family pet Lupo last November – were given a black cocker spaniel puppy from Kate’s brother last year. Pet company BarkBox have compiled a list of the top 100 most popular dog names in 2020, based on their subscribers. Bella takes the top prize but there are many other names that are inherently human on the list, including Charlie, Jack, Lucy and Ellie.

The second most popular name is Luna which is Latin for Moon and was the name given to a supporting character in the Harry Potter series.

But that isn't the only moniker to take inspiration from a film. For instance the names Rocky, AKA Rocky Balboa, is also up there and so is Nala, who is Simba's mother in The Lion King.

There are also some inspired by ancient mythology, such as Apollo, Zeus and Thor, as well as pups names after other animals such as Moose and Bear.
