The best camper vans, air mattresses, and trailers for a comfy camping trip

Love camping but hate sleeping in a soggy tent?

Or maybe you want to go on adventure without dragging a whole caravan behind you.

Whether it’s staying in a classic VW camper van or transforming your car into a bed on wheels, here are some of the best ways to camp in comfort this autumn.

Let’s get on the road!

Retro roaming

For more than two, step it up a gear and book a ride in Dougal, a beautiful baby-blue VW campervan that can sleep up to four people.

Originally from Brazil, Dougal has been thoroughly modernised and is a dreamy drive with power steering, swivel leather seats, a pop-up roof and a modern kitchenette.

Dougal is just one of hundreds available on Camptoo, a kind of Airbnb for campervans and motorhomes.

Take it easy

One of the hardest things about camping is the setting up and taking down of the tent. Remove all the fuss with an easy-to-drive, easy-to-park microcamper.

For a last-minute romantic getaway, this cutesy Mazda Bongo from Blue Dog Campervan hire can navigate even the tiniest Cornish lanes to discover hidden beaches.

It sleeps two and has a rear kitchen plus solar-powered cool box, lights and power points.

Budget bunks

For a budget escape, the most inventive of campers can turn their car into a campervan for a night or two.

If you have a hatchback or an estate, simply fold down the seats, chuck in an inflatable mattress and it’s a cheap, cheerful and surprisingly comfortable way to camp for a night or two.

Alternatively, an inflatable car mattress can transform any vehicle into a cosy camper.

Trailer flash

Once the domain of the 1970s camping family, the trailer tent has made a slick comeback in recent years, thanks in part to the arrival of Air Opus, a modern, self-inflating folding camper.

Kind of like a fold-up caravan, the Air Opus can be inflated in 90 seconds to reveal double beds, a plush leatherette seating area and a kitchenette, complete with heating, lighting and running water.

Camplify offers several trailer tents for hire, including ‘Bruce’ from Bicester, a luxury trailer that sleeps up to six.

Under one roof

With a little stretch of the imagination, you could be watching wild hyena roam the Serengeti from the roof of your safari jeep but in reality you’ve just spotted a dead badger on Salisbury Plain from the roof of your Ford Mondeo.

Patented in Italy in 1958, where it was called ‘air camping’, roof tents for cars are set to be all the rage this year.

Rooftent Utopia sells and hires both hard-shell and soft-shell roof tents, which fit almost any car and can sleep up to five.
