Bargain hunters snap up Xmas clearance items, from 75p Christmas trees to £3.45 turkeys

CHRISTMAS may be over but bargain hunters are already getting ahead for next year by snapping up cut-price festive items in clearance sales.

From very cheap turkeys to a £1 Christmas pudding and 75p Christmas trees, excited money savers are sharing snaps of their hauls on social media.

One savvy shopper, Alice Smith, managed to pick up a medium frozen turkey from a branch of Asda that feeds up to 10 people for just £3.45.

Originally, it cost £13 – a saving of £9.55 or 73 per cent.

Another bargain hunter, Sharon Reid, picked up a luxury Christmas pudding from a M&S shop for just £1 down from £10 – a saving of £9, or 90 per cent.

The chocolate and salted caramel pudding was originally only reduced to £6 – but she saw its expiry date was for Boxing Day and asked a member of staff to reduce it even further.

They and other thrifty shoppers shared pictures of their festive bargains on the Extreme Couponing and Bargains UK Facebook group.

Most supermarkets have removed Christmas items from sale on their websites, so you will have to head into stores to seek out bargains.

There are also plenty of chocolate bargains around, with thrifty shopper Steph McGaw snapping a photo of a huge stack of Celebrations advent calendars at one B&M store for just 20p each.

Meanwhile Tesco is selling 720g tubs of Celebrations and Quality Street for £2.50 each in selected stores only.

Many people are preparing to take down their decorations, but bargain hunters are busy buying even more so they can get ahead for Christmas 2019.

One savvy shopper, Bernie Edwards, picked up a cuddly reindeer fill-it-yourself advent calendar for £2 at Sainsbury's, down from £20 – a saving of £18, or 90 per cent.

How to find the cheapest deals

FOLLOW our tips and tricks to cut the costs of your shopping:

  • Find the cheapest online prices: Google Shopping is a good tool for finding the cheapest price – it searches a wide range of retailers of various sizes
  • Abandon online shopping baskets: Don't go straight to check-out after putting the items in your basket – it may tease retailers into giving you discount codes
  • Ask a site to negotiate a fee for you: If you're struggling to find a deal, Flubit is a free site that aims to negotiate discounts for you
  • Sign up to retailers' newsletters for big discounts: It sometimes means a percentage discount code, or a straight discount off your first shop
  • Check when stores discount groceries: Check with your local store when they discount food items that are about to expire – this is the perfect time to nab bargains

She said she would save it for next year, as it can be used again and again.

Chloe Burton said she snapped up two mini real Christmas trees decorated with battery-powered lights for 75p each down from £15 – a saving of £14.15 or 95 per cent.

She said she would plant them in the garden so that she can re-pot and use them again next Christmas.

Laura Reynolds also picked up dozens of rolls of wrapping paper for just 10p each at her local branch of Asda.

If you want to go hunting for festive bargains, make sure you shop around so that you really do get the best price.

And it's a good idea to only buy items you really need or want so you don't spend money on things you would never buy normally.
