DEAR DEIDRE: THREE months ago my lovely son was diagnosed with terminal cancer. His girlfriend’s mum won’t let her see him.
He’s 26 and the kindest person you could wish to meet.

We are taking each day as it comes and I’m so incredibly grateful for every single moment he is still here.
He is talking to a girl he met online before his diagnosis. She is 24 but extremely dependent on her mum.
Her mum doesn’t want any relationship to develop because she doesn’t want her daughter to be upset once my son dies.
I’m his mum and 52.
I think this girl is pretty much just playing with my son.

He would love things to develop – not so much sexually, I think, but just to know someone is there, caring for him, someone he can cuddle up to.
I love him so much. I just want him to have a tiny bit of happiness. No one deserves it more.
DEIDRE SAYS: Of course you want your son to be happy for the rest of his life.
This girl is an adult but still being influenced by her mother – though it is only natural she wants to protect her daughter from any distress.
This is a fledgling relationship but a cancer diagnosis can sometimes reveal that a relationship is not as strong as it may have initially seemed.
Encourage your son to meet new people too, rather than pin all his hopes on this one girl.
